How to Prepare for a CT Scan: A Patient Checklist
A CT scan is a fast imaging examination that uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed views inside the body. Preparation depends on the body area and whether contrast material is required, so always follow the instructions provided for your specific appointment.
Documents and information to bring
- Your doctor’s prescription or referral.
- Previous CT, MRI, X-ray or ultrasound images and reports.
- A current list of medicines and known allergies.
- Relevant blood-test results if requested, especially kidney-function tests before certain contrast studies.
Food, drink and medicines
Some CT examinations require fasting, while others do not. Confirm this when booking rather than fasting unnecessarily. Continue regular medicines unless your doctor or the imaging team provides different instructions. Patients taking diabetes medicines should ask whether any timing adjustment is required.
Tell the team before the scan
Inform the radiology staff about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney disease, asthma, diabetes, allergies, or any previous reaction to contrast material. This helps the team select the safest suitable protocol. If contrast is planned, you will receive an explanation and an opportunity to ask questions.
During and after the scan
You may need to remove metal objects and change into a gown. The table moves through a wide, ring-shaped scanner. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly. The scan itself is usually quick, although preparation can take longer. Follow any hydration or observation instructions given afterward.
