X-Ray Imaging: Common Uses and What Patients Should Know

X-ray imaging is one of the most widely used diagnostic tools. It can help clinicians evaluate bones, joints, the chest and several other areas quickly. The examination uses a controlled amount of ionising radiation to create images that a radiologist interprets.

Common reasons for an X-ray

Doctors may request X-rays to assess a suspected fracture or dislocation, joint alignment, chest symptoms, certain infections, degenerative changes or follow-up after treatment. The requested views depend on the clinical question written on the referral.

How to prepare

Most routine X-rays require little preparation. Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to remove jewellery, belts or other metal objects near the area being examined. Bring your referral and previous relevant images or reports for comparison.

Always tell the technologist if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. The imaging team will review the request and apply appropriate precautions. Do not avoid a medically necessary examination without discussing the concern with your doctor.

What happens during the examination?

The technologist positions the body part between the X-ray equipment and detector. You may need to hold still or briefly hold your breath. More than one view is often required. The procedure is generally quick and does not cause pain, although positioning an injured area can sometimes be uncomfortable.

Understanding the report

A radiologist examines the images and issues a report. Your referring clinician combines the imaging findings with your examination, symptoms and other tests. Avoid drawing conclusions from the images alone.
